Meditation

Ages ago I learned the meditation was listening to the divine. As opposed to prayer being speaking to the divine. This resonates with me - listening to the divine. But now, it’s not so much about listening for that which is beyond me, but that which is me. I have several different practices of meditation. Sometimes I’m sitting quietly, with an inward gaze. Sometimes I’m breathing slowly into my heart. Sometimes it’s yoga, sometimes it’s hiking and gazing at the green wonder that are the trees and the mosses. Sometimes it’s laying in my hammock. Sometimes I write. And I write and I write. Writing through my thoughts and wonders with curiosity. And that’s just the beginning of the many ways I meditate….

When people come to my meditation classes, they’ll often announce how bad they are at meditating, before they even sit down. But you can’t be. You just can’t be. That’d be like being bad at breathing. If you’re reading this, you’re good at breathing.

Today a dear friend helped me connect the dots on some contemplations I’ve been having. It reminded me how meditation can be listening to a loved one. I wasn’t sitting in deep Samadhi – I was sitting in shallow water in a delicious river. The divine is speaking to us all of the time and sometimes, like today, she spoke directly and swiftly.
